The Government of India has initiated the development of Unity Malls in each state and Union Territory of India. These hubs shall contribute to the economic growth, cultural diversity and tourism across the nation.
These malls will promote and sell products from each district of the state and also other states of the nation. The Unity Mall in scenic Meghalaya reimagines the traditional mall as a dynamic high street, transforming it into a vibrant array of multi-purpose, varied spaces. The innovative design fostering interaction and creating vibrant public spaces, highlights the mall's role as a social and cultural hub. Located within the Administrative City in the New Shillong Township, this greenfield site, positioned strategically between the new State Legislative Assembly and Shillong Airport, is poised to capitalize on the anticipated influx of visitors. Beyond its commercial role, the Unity Mall aims to establish an iconic landmark, transforming the township into a vibrant urban and tourist destination. By uniting the cultural elements of Meghalaya and other states, it celebrates India's diverse cultural heritage.

The iconic mall aims to enhance the tourism-based economy, promote indigenous crafts, and create a space for unity, inclusivity, and celebration. It features spaces for social interaction and cultural exchange, such as plazas and amphitheatres. Aligned with the vision of preserving natural assets and ensuring ecosystem sustainability, the Mall features dedicated exhibition spaces and artisan workshops showcasing unique crafts from all states and union territories, along with products from Meghalaya’s 12 districts, under the One District One Product initiative, elevating them to a national level.
Navigating Nature, Tech, and Tradition
A vibrant food court is encircled by pavilions housing commercial facilities. Bridges, pathways and seating areas along water channels enhance the serene ambiance. An amphitheatre, seamlessly integrated into the natural landscape, provides a venue for various events. The Mall features various galleries as well as exhibitions and event spaces, dedicated areas for recreational and cultural activities, and ample parking facilities to support these functions.
By creating a strategic public realm and respecting site topography, the design ensures inclusivity, while prioritizing functional usability, spatial legibility, and aesthetic appeal. The built form is oriented to maximize views and adapt to the architectural and climatic nuances of the region, while also aligning to the gentle slope, that minimizes cut and fill.
Fostering Sustainability and Inclusivity, creating a Sense of Place
The sustainability features integrated into the design prioritize environmental responsibility, cultural preservation, and community well-being. Respect for the hilly terrain is emphasized, with structures built to complement rather than alter the landscape. Sustainable landscaping with native plants promotes biodiversity and reduces water consumption, while sourcing materials locally minimizes transportation emissions and supports the re gional economy. Natural ventilation techniques enhance indoor air quality and reduce energy usage, alongside the integration of renewable energy sources like solar power. Environmental conservation efforts include implementing rainwater harvesting systems and waste management strategies such as composting and recycling. Inclusivity and accessibility principles ensure that all visitors, including seniors, differently abled individuals, and children, can access and enjoy the amenities within the Unity Mall.
