John Adams

Executive Vice President, Buildings, Stantec

After obtaining his B.Sc. and M.Sc. in engineering from the University of New Brunswick in Eastern Canada, John went onto work in both the upstream and downstream oil patch sectors. He started his own firm in the mid-eighties where, as CEO, he helped design and patent tools for pipeline inspection and other oil field, mining, and utility company operations. He sold that firm to what was to become BJ Services in 1991 and spent 15 years with that company running a global process and pipeline division with 23 offices in 13 countries. After 27 years in managing divisions and companies in Western Canada (17 years) and Scotland (10 years) John returned to Eastern Canada where he joined Jacques Whitford, now Stantec, in November 2005. He was the President, Atlantic there when Stantec acquired the company in 2009 and initially John continued to run the Atlantic Canada group as VP Atlantic. In 2011, he then went into his current role where he is in charge of International operations. The International practices have included buildings architecture and engineering, geotechnical, environmental, infrastructure, planning, oil and gas, and mining services. Stantec annually works in over 30 countries globally. John also serves on the Board of the EMI-Stantec Joint Venture which operates in the offshore sector of Eastern Canada. John has published over twenty technical papers on a variety of subjects during his career. John has travelled, managed and worked in over 50 countries during his career and his broad technical and business experience makes him an ideal external advisor for the INI in its continuing quest for design excellence and continuous growth. His entrepreneurial spirit has led him through creative outlets and risk-taking endeavors on a career path that has spanned the globe. John’s no problem can’t be solved attitude, no doubt, has won over all those who work alongside him.

The essence of innovation of an organization lies in the risks they take.
